UK Finance Director

Client
The client is a significant manufacturing business and part of a well-regarded international group. It has a turnover of c£60million with c400 colleagues and its processes include design, development, manufacturing, assembly, test and service aftermarket support for its precision engineered products and systems. It supplies a global marketplace in sectors such as defence, oil and gas, rail and industrial to name some in which the demands for quality and fulfilment are renowned.
Challenge
To recruit a high-calibre Finance Director. Reporting to the UK Managing Director, the role required a tenacious and proactive individual with a strong sense of drive and experience of system driven information and performance. As a Finance Director, to play a key role in overseeing and shaping the financial health of the company.
Objectives
Our primary objectives were to identify a candidate who could deliver precise financial reporting and projections, manage departmental budgets effectively, and lead the UK finance team. The ideal candidate was expected to ensure the maintenance of stringent financial controls and provide strategic guidance on the financial aspects of commercial and defence contracts. They were also responsible for fostering strong relationships with key external stakeholders, including banks and auditors. Additionally, we sought an individual who could drive positive cultural change within the finance department, with a focus on growth, continuous improvement, and the adoption of updated processes and data across the company. The successful candidate was expected to be a qualified Chartered Accountant, bringing exceptional budgeting, analytical, and forecasting skills to support UK business strategies, with a proven ability to identify opportunities for profit development and cash generation. Experience in contract accounting, managing large customer projects, and single sourcing, particularly within the manufacturing sector, was highly desirable. Moreover, strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with the Senior Management team while effectively representing the UK business externally were essential to the role.
Process
Client consultation
We held in-depth discussions with our clients leadership team to understand the organisation's structure, culture, values, and strategic goals. During these consultations, we defined the key competencies, skills, and qualities required for the UK Finance Director role.
Assignment preparation
We prepared a detailed Assignment Brief that outlined the organisation's background, services, and the specific role details and responsibilities. This brief also included a candidate profile description, required qualifications, and a summary of the anticipated benefits package. This document was then used as the foundation for the recruitment process and to brief candidates during interviews.
Candidate sourcing
We developed a customised outreach strategy to identify and engage potential candidates. This included a combination of executive search, industry referrals, and targeted advertising, aimed at attracting top-tier talent suitable for the UK Finance Director position.
Screening and assessment
Candidates were evaluated based on their experience, leadership style, strategic vision, and alignment with the organisation's values. We conducted in-depth interviews, reference checks, and had shortlisted candidates complete our unique Self-Awareness Questionnaire to ensure a comprehensive evaluation.

We assisted in the final selection process, helping with salary negotiations and securing the chosen candidate. We also supported the onboarding process to ensure a smooth transition into the role, managing all candidate communication and interview logistics throughout the process.
Outcome
The executive search process culminated in the presentation of a shortlist of ten highly qualified candidates to the client within two months of the project’s commencement. Following the first round of interviews, this list was further refined to the top four candidates. Ultimately, a standout candidate was selected and offered the position.
